Surgery Communion

Communion is powerful before and after surgery because it connects your body — the very body that will be under the knife — to the body of Christ, which was broken so yours could be healed. When you take the bread, you are declaring that by His stripes you are healed. When you take the cup, you are declaring that His blood covers every aspect of the procedure — the surgeon's hands, the anesthesia, every incision, and every moment of recovery.

Many believers take Communion the night before surgery, or in pre-op waiting if they can keep water down. Others receive it in recovery, as soon as they are able. There is no wrong time. What matters is the act of faith — anchoring your body to the broken body of Christ and trusting that the same power that raised Jesus from the dead is at work in your healing.

Psalm 41 is a psalm of David, and verse 3 contains a promise that has brought comfort to countless believers facing illness and medical procedures: "The Lord sustains them on their sickbed and restores them from their bed of illness." Notice two things here. First, God does not promise you will never be on a sickbed. The psalm assumes you might be. Hospital beds, surgery tables, and recovery rooms are part of life in a fallen world. But second — and this is the promise — God sustains you there. He is not distant from your suffering. He is present in it.

The word "sustains" in Hebrew means to support, uphold, and strengthen. Think of a nurse adjusting your pillows, checking your vitals, and making sure you are comfortable — multiplied by infinity, with perfect knowledge of every cell in your body. God sustains you. And then the promise intensifies: "and restores them from their bed of illness." Restoration. Recovery. The Hebrew word literally means to turn or overturn — God overturns the illness. He flips the situation. He turns the bed of illness into a testimony of healing.

Isaiah 53:5 adds the foundation for this healing: "By His wounds we are healed." The stripes on Jesus' back, the crown of thorns on His head, the nails in His hands and feet — these were not just for the forgiveness of sins. They purchased physical healing as well. The body of Christ was broken so that your body could be made whole. As you face surgery, you can stand on this promise with confidence. The Great Physician has already paid for your healing. The surgery is one of the means He may use to deliver it.
