Foster parenting is one of the most sacrificial forms of love — opening your home and your heart to children in crisis, knowing they may not stay. It comes with unique challenges: navigating the system, loving children through trauma, managing goodbyes. But it is also holy ground. God sees every middle-of-the-night comfort, every patient explanation, every tear you cry when they leave. This prayer is for you, foster parent — you are doing sacred work.
A Prayer for Foster Families
Father God, You are the Father to the fatherless and the defender of the vulnerable. You have placed a calling on my life to open my home to children who need safety, stability, and love — and I need Your strength to do this well.
Give me patience when the behaviors are hard and the progress feels slow. Give me wisdom when I don't know how to handle the trauma that shows up in unexpected ways. Give me grace — for the children and for myself — on the days when I feel like I'm failing.
Protect the children in my care, Lord. Heal the wounds they came with — the neglect, the abuse, the instability. Let my home be a place where they experience safety, maybe for the first time. Let them feel Your love through my imperfect but willing hands.
Prepare my heart for goodbyes. I know that reunification is the goal, and I know that loving them means I may have to let them go. Give me the grace to grieve, the strength to keep going, and the faith to trust that the seeds I planted will bear fruit even if I am not the one who sees the harvest.
For my own family — my spouse, my biological children — protect our unity. Help us navigate the dynamics of a constantly changing household with love and flexibility. Let this calling draw us closer together, not pull us apart.
Lord, I can't do this on my own. The need is too great, the work is too hard, and my heart is too human. But I trust that You who called me to this will equip me for it. Use me. Fill me. Sustain me.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
