You're smart. You might be very smart. You went to school. You read books. You listen to podcasts. You know things.

But you're still making messed up decisions. Your smart brain is leading you somewhere you don't want to go.

That's because being smart and being wise are not the same thing.

Paul keeps trying to tell you: Stop relying on how smart you are. Start asking God for wisdom.

Because wisdom is the one thing that will actually save your life.

Smart vs. Wise

They're Completely Different

SMART

Knowing information. Having knowledge. Understanding how things work.

Smart about finances → still in debt

Smart about relationships → still picks wrong

Smart about health → still destroys body

Smart about career → still makes bad choices

Smart is just having information.

WISE

Knowing what to DO with information. Making good decisions. Connecting actions to outcomes.

Wise with finances → builds wealth

Wise with relationships → picks right

Wise with health → protects body

Wise with career → fulfills calling

Wisdom makes you do the right thing.

EPHESIANS 5:15-16

"Be very careful, then, how you live — not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil."

Smart people know right from wrong. Wise people actually do the right thing.

Why You Need Wisdom

Intelligence Isn't Going to Save You

Your intelligence can't save you. Your intelligence got you into some of the mess you're in.

"This relationship looks good on paper."

Now you're heartbroken.

"This financial decision makes sense."

Now you're in debt.

"This job opportunity is perfect."

Now you're miserable.

"This situation is fine, ignore the red flags."

Now you're in trouble.

You need wisdom.

Wisdom is the ability to see what intelligence can't. Wisdom senses what's wrong even when it looks right. Wisdom makes decisions that actually work out.

JAMES 1:5

"If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you."

Notice: "If any of you lacks wisdom" — that's everyone. But God gives it generously. You just have to ask.

Paul Keeps Saying the Same Thing

Ask God for Wisdom. Every Single Day.

Paul is obsessed with this. He keeps coming back to it.

COLOSSIANS 1:9

"For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives."

Constantly. Every day. For wisdom.

Paul is not praying: "God, make them rich." Not: "God, make their lives easy." Not: "God, give them success."

Paul is praying: "God, give them wisdom."

Because Paul knows: if you have wisdom, everything else follows. If you're making wise decisions, your life works.

How Paul Would Say It Today

If He Was Speaking to Your Generation

"Listen. I know you're smart. You've got Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, podcasts. You've got access to more information than any generation in history.

But you're still making bad decisions. Why? Because smart isn't enough.

You need wisdom. You need the ability to see what's actually happening.

You don't get that from Google. You don't get that from your friends. You don't get that from your own brain.

You get that from God.

Every single morning, before you do anything, ask God for wisdom.

'God, give me wisdom today. Help me see clearly. Help me make good decisions. Help me understand Your will.' Because when you operate in wisdom, everything changes.

What Wisdom Actually Looks Like

You'll Know It When You Have It

Relationships

Smart brain says

"This person is attractive, pursue them."

Wisdom says

"This person shows red flags. This isn't the one for you."

Finances

Smart brain says

"This investment could make you rich."

Wisdom says

"This doesn't feel right. Wait. Be patient."

Decisions

Smart brain says

"This opportunity looks perfect."

Wisdom says

"Not the right timing. Wait for the better one."

Conversations

Smart brain says

"Tell them exactly what you think."

Wisdom says

"This isn't the time. This will make things worse. Be quiet."

Calling

Smart brain says

"Do what's profitable, impressive, looks good."

Wisdom says

"Do what God is calling you to do, even if nobody sees it."

Paul's Daily Practice

Here's What He's Actually Telling You to Do

EPHESIANS 5:17-19

"Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is. Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit."

Every day. Understand what God wants. Every day. Be filled with God's Spirit.

Here's what Paul's morning routine probably looked like:

"God, today I'm going to face situations. People are going to come to me. I'm going to have to make decisions. I don't want to be foolish. I don't want to trust my own brain. Give me wisdom today. Help me see clearly. Help me know what you want me to do."

He encounters a problem → wisdom helps him solve it. He meets a person → wisdom tells him who they really are. He faces a decision → wisdom tells him which way to go. Because he asked for it first thing.

How to Actually Ask for Wisdom

Make It Your Daily Prayer

1

Make it the first thing you do.

Before you check your phone. Before coffee. Before anything. Get still. Get quiet. Talk to God.

2

Be specific about what you need wisdom for.

"God, I need wisdom about this relationship." "This job situation." "This financial choice." "To see people clearly."

3

Ask God to help you SEE.

"Help me see this situation clearly. Help me see this person's true character. Help me see what's really going on."

4

Ask God to help you KNOW.

"Help me know what to do. Help me know what's right. Help me know Your will. Help me know what matters."

5

Ask God to help you CHOOSE.

"Help me make the right choice even if it's hard. Help me choose Your way over my way. Help me choose wisely."

6

Do it daily.

Make this your habit. Your practice. Your first prayer every morning: "God, give me wisdom today."

A Prayer for You

Father, I'm praying for everyone reading this who's been trying to do life with just their intelligence.

I pray that You would help them see that being smart isn't enough. I pray that they would stop trusting their own brain and start asking You for wisdom.

I pray that they would make asking for wisdom their daily practice. Every morning. First thing.

I pray that they would receive the wisdom You're so eager to give them. I pray that they would see clearly. I pray that they would make choices that work out.

In Jesus's name. Amen.

Stop Being Smart. Start Being Wise.

You're smart. But smart isn't enough.

Intelligence can't protect you. Your brain can't save you. You need more than information.

You need wisdom.

Wisdom is seeing what's really going on. Knowing what to do. Making choices that actually work.

Wisdom comes from God.

Not from your brain. Not from experience. Not from friends. From God — who gives generously.

Ask God for wisdom every single day.

Make it your first prayer. Make it your habit: "God, give me wisdom today."

Stop being smart. Start being wise. That's the move.
