You ask this question. Maybe not out loud, but you ask it.

Why do my relationships always fall apart? Why can't I get ahead? Why do I keep making the same mistakes? Why does bad stuff keep happening? Why can't I catch a break?

You look at your life and it feels like everything is against you. Like you're cursed. Like the universe is conspiring to make things difficult.

But what if the answer isn't "out there"?

What if the answer is flowing out of your heart right now?

The Real Reason Everything Goes Wrong

It's Not What You Think

PROVERBS 4:23

"Guard your heart above all else, for it is the wellspring of life."

The wellspring of life. That's not casual language. A wellspring is a source — where water flows from. Your heart is the wellspring. Your life flows from your heart.

What's IN your heart flows OUT into your life.

MATTHEW 12:34

"Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks."

Abundance means overflow — what's so full inside that it spills out.

Whatever is in your heart in abundance is going to flow out of your mouth, into your decisions, into your actions, into your relationships, into your life.

Bitterness overflows → bitterness spills everywhereFear overflows → fear contaminates every decisionGreed overflows → greed ruins your relationshipsJealousy overflows → jealousy poisons your perspective

What's Inside Comes Out

You Can't Hide What's in Your Heart

Your heart is like a well. What you put down into that well eventually comes back up. And once it comes up, it flows everywhere.

LUKE 6:45

"The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil; for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks."

Notice: the good person produces good. The evil person produces evil. Not because of circumstances. But because of what's treasured in their heart. What's treasured in your heart is what will flow out of you.

You can't hide what's in your heart. It will come out. It will overflow. It will create your reality.

The Issues of Life

What Flows Out of Your Heart Creates Everything

The Hebrew word for "issues" in Proverbs 4:23 is pareyah — it means "going forth," "proceeding," "flowing out." The issues of your life are what flows out of your heart.

If BITTERNESS is in your heart:

Your words become bitterRelationships become bitterPeople don't want to be around youEverything tastes like poisonYou see the worst in everyone

If FEAR is in your heart:

You don't take risks or tryYou assume the worstYou miss opportunitiesYou create the thing you're afraid ofYour life becomes small and anxious

If GREED is in your heart:

You're never satisfiedYou take advantage of peopleRelationships become transactionalMoney controls youOpportunities dry up

If JEALOUSY is in your heart:

You compare constantlyYou resent others' successYou're never happy for anyoneYou sabotage your own goodRelationships turn competitive

If SHAME is in your heart:

You don't believe in yourselfYou accept mistreatmentYou hide who you areYou make decisions from unworthinessYour life becomes smaller

If RESENTMENT is in your heart:

Everything hurts youYou're always offendedYou keep score and can't let goYou bring up old woundsRelationships become battlegrounds

Now look at the opposite. When GOOD is in your heart:

If LOVE is in your heart:

Words become loving. Relationships thrive. People are drawn to you. Life becomes abundant.

If PEACE is in your heart:

Decisions are calm. You're not reactive. People trust you. Life becomes stable.

If JOY is in your heart:

You see possibilities. You're grateful. Good things happen. Life becomes beautiful.

The Mouth Speaks What the Heart Is Full Of

Your Words Reveal Your Heart

MATTHEW 12:34

"Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks."

Your mouth is the speaker. But your heart is the author. So if you want to know what's really in your heart, listen to what comes out of your mouth.

When you're stressed — what do you say? That reveals your heart.

When you're faced with a problem — what do you say? That reveals your heart.

When someone succeeds — what do you say? That reveals your heart.

When things don't go your way — what do you say? That reveals your heart.

And your words don't just reveal your heart — they create your life. You speak bitterness → bitterness is created in your relationships. You speak faith → faith is created in your actions.

Why Everything Goes Wrong for You

The Real Answer

Because what's flowing out of your heart has created an environment of "everything going wrong."

You wake up with resentment. You speak resentfully. People respond negatively. Your day becomes negative.

You make decisions from fear. Those decisions create more things to fear. Your circumstances become fearful.

You're greedy. You take advantage. People don't trust you. Your relationships fail. Your opportunities dry up.

You're jealous. You see success as a threat. You don't celebrate. People stop including you. You become isolated.

It's not bad luck. It's not the universe against you. It's not other people's fault. It's what's flowing out of your heart creating your life.

But Here's the Good News

You Can Change What Flows Out

You're not stuck. Your heart created your life. But you can change your heart.

When you change what's in your heart, what flows out changes. And your life changes.

How to Change What Flows Out

Three Steps to Transform Your Heart

1

Recognize what's in your heart.

Observe

Listen to yourself. What comes out of your mouth? That's what's in your heart. Constantly complaining? Complaint in your heart. Constantly criticizing? Judgment in your heart. Constantly worried? Fear in your heart. Don't judge yourself — just observe. What's actually in there?

2

Deliberately put good things in your heart.

Feed

Read Scripture that contradicts what's in your heart. Fear in your heart? Read about faith. Bitterness? Read about forgiveness. Shame? Read about your worth in God. Meditate on the truth. Let it soak in. Spend time with people who have what you want in your heart — peace is contagious, joy is contagious, faith is contagious. Feed your heart with what you want to overflow.

3

Notice what changes.

Notice

As you fill your heart with good things, notice how your words change. How your decisions change. How your life changes. People respond differently. Opportunities show up. Relationships improve. Circumstances shift. This isn't magic — this is cause and effect. Change what's in your heart, and what flows out changes. Change what flows out, and your life changes.

The Scriptures Confirm It

Everything Jesus Taught Points to Your Heart

MATTHEW 7:18

"A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit."

Your heart is the tree. Your life is the fruit.

PROVERBS 4:23 (MSG)

"Keep vigilant watch over your heart; that's where life starts."

Life starts in your heart. Everything flows from there.

MATTHEW 5:8

"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God."

Pure heart. Intentionally filled with what's right.

PROVERBS 4:23 (NCV)

"Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it."

Everything you do. Everything. It all flows from your heart.

A Prayer for You

Father, I'm praying for everyone reading this who's been asking "Why does everything go wrong for me?"

I pray that You would open their eyes to see that the answer is flowing out of their heart right now. I pray that they would stop blaming circumstances and start examining their heart.

I pray that they would have the courage to see what's really in there. I pray that they would be willing to change it.

I pray that they would fill their heart with Your Word, with Your truth, with Your love. I pray that they would guard their heart intentionally.

And I pray that as they change what's in their heart, they would see their life transform. That what flows out would be beautiful.

In Jesus's name. Amen.

The Answer Is in Your Heart

Everything that goes wrong flows out of your heart.

Not because you're bad or cursed. Because what's in your heart overflows — and what overflows becomes your life.

Your words reveal your heart.

Your decisions reveal your heart. Your life reveals your heart.

You can change your heart.

Fill it with what's good. Guard it against what's destructive. Intentionally cultivate what you want to overflow.

When you change your heart, your life changes.

Not luck. Not circumstances. What flows out of your heart creates your reality.

The real question isn't "Why does everything go wrong?" It's "What am I letting overflow out of my heart?" Because that's what's creating your life.
