From far away, a wolf looks exactly like a dog. Same shape. Same size. Same fur. Same basic features.
But if you get close, if you look carefully, if you watch what it does — you'll see the truth. It's not a dog. It's a wolf.
Your heart and your spirit are the same way. They look similar. They feel similar. People use the words interchangeably. But they're not the same thing. Not even close.
And if you confuse them, your life falls apart.
What Jesus Meant by "Heart"

When Jesus talks about your heart, He's not talking about the organ in your chest. He's talking about something specific.

Your HEART is your desires. Your HEART is what you love. Your HEART is what you want.
It means the center of your feelings, your emotions, your wants, your loves. Your heart is where your affections are. Your heart is what you're drawn to. Your heart is what you pursue.

"Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."
Your treasure reveals your heart. What you love, what you want, what you pursue — that's your heart.

"Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks."

Understanding Your True Self
Greek: pneuma (NEW-muh)
Your SPIRIT is your eternal self. Your SPIRIT is what's made in God's image. Your SPIRIT is what connects to God.
It means breath, wind, life force. It's the part of you that's eternal, that's spiritual, that's connected to God.
JOHN 4:24
"God is spirit, and his worshippers must worship in the spirit and in truth."
Your spirit is the part that can connect to God's Spirit. Your spirit is the part that worships and knows God.
JOHN 6:63
"It is the spirit who gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you — they are full of the Spirit and life."
They Look the Same But They're Not

Your heart and your spirit can FEEL the same. They can LOOK the same. They can SEEM like the same thing.
“I love this person.”
“I love God.”
They both sound like love. They both sound like desire. Do you see how easy it is to confuse them?
“I want this so badly.”
“I desire God's truth.”
They both sound like love. They both sound like desire. Do you see how easy it is to confuse them?
“This feels right to me.”
“This aligns with what's right.”
They both sound like love. They both sound like desire. Do you see how easy it is to confuse them?
“I need this to be happy.”
“I need God to be whole.”
They both sound like love. They both sound like desire. Do you see how easy it is to confuse them?
How to Tell the Difference
Watch What Happens. The Behaviors Give It Away.
You can't always tell a wolf from a dog by looking. But you can tell by watching what it does.
When the WOLF (your heart) is in charge:
The wolf doesn't build. The wolf destroys.
When the DOG (your spirit) is in charge:
The dog doesn't destroy. The dog protects.

"A good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit."
Watch the fruit. That's how you tell which one is running your life.
Why People Confuse Them
How We Got So Mixed Up
They're close together.
Your heart and your spirit are both inside you. Both real. So people think they must be the same thing. But your brain and your heart organ are both inside your body — that doesn't make them the same. Just because they're close doesn't mean they're the same.
The culture teaches you to follow your heart.
"Follow your heart." "Listen to your heart." "Your heart knows the way." We hear this constantly and think it must be true. But the Bible says to guard your heart, not follow it. The Bible says your heart can deceive you.
Your heart is LOUD.
Your heart is screaming all day: "I want this!" "I feel this way!" "Follow me!" Your spirit is quiet. Your spirit is calm. Your spirit speaks truth, but it's not loud. So you hear your heart and you think that's you. But the loudest voice is not always the truest voice.

Scriptures That Show the Difference
Jesus on the HEART:
MATTHEW 15:19
"For out of the heart come evil thoughts — murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander."
Your heart produces evil thoughts. Your heart can be wrong.
MATTHEW 6:24
"No one can serve two masters. You cannot serve both God and money."
Your heart will be devoted to something. Make sure it's God.
Jesus on the SPIRIT:
MATTHEW 26:41
"The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak."
Your spirit wants to do right. Your flesh pulls you toward wrong. They're in conflict.
MATTHEW 5:3
"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."
The kingdom is found in your spirit's connection to God — not in your heart's desires.
Do you see the pattern? Jesus keeps distinguishing between them. He keeps warning people not to confuse them.
The Spirit Is Willing But the Flesh Is Weak
Understanding the War Inside You
MATTHEW 26:41
"The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak."
Your spirit (dog) is willing. Your spirit wants to do right. Your spirit wants to follow God. Your spirit knows the truth.
But your flesh (wolf) — your body, your desires, your heart — is weak. It pulls you toward what feels good. It wants immediate gratification. It doesn't care about long-term consequences.
“Don't do this. You know this is wrong.”
“Do it! It feels so good!”
“This person is bad for you.”
“But I love them!”
“Be patient. Trust God.”
“I want it NOW!”
And the wolf looks like a dog from a distance. So you think you're following yourself. You think you're being authentic. But you're following the wolf. And the wolf destroys.
How to Know Which One Is Running Your Life
Three Questions That Reveal the Truth
What are the results?
Does your life have peace or chaos? Do your relationships thrive or break down? Do you feel whole or broken? The wolf creates destruction. The dog creates peace.
Who's making the decisions?
Are you making decisions based on what feels good right now? Or based on what's true and what's right? The wolf says: "How do I feel about this?" The dog says: "What does God say about this?"
What are you pursuing?
Are you pursuing pleasure, comfort, excitement, what you want? Or are you pursuing God, truth, righteousness, what's right? The wolf pursues what it desires. The dog pursues its master.
Your Heart Will Betray You
But Your Spirit Won't
JEREMIAH 17:9
"The heart is deceitful above all things."
Deceitful. That means your heart lies to you.
Your heart tells you: "This person loves you." (But they're using you.) "This will make you happy." (But it will destroy you.) Your heart feels so convincing. But your heart is a liar.
But your spirit won't betray you. Your spirit tells you the truth. Your spirit knows what's right. Your spirit is connected to God who IS truth.
The Choice Is Yours
You have both a wolf and a dog inside you. The one that runs your life is the one you feed.
Feed the WOLF
Give it what it wants. Listen to it. Follow it. The wolf gets stronger — and destroys your life.
Feed the DOG
Give it God's Word. Listen to it. Follow it. The dog gets stronger — and protects your life.
But understand: the wolf will never admit it's a wolf. It will say: "I'm a dog. I'm you. I'm your true self. Trust me."
That's why you have to look at the results. Watch the behaviors. Know the difference.
A Prayer for You
Father, I'm praying for everyone reading this who's been following the wolf thinking it's a dog.
I pray that You would open their eyes to see the difference. I pray that they would stop confusing their heart with their spirit.
I pray that they would feed their spirit instead of their heart. I pray that they would listen to their spirit instead of their emotions.
I pray that they would experience the protection and peace that comes from following their spirit — following You.
And I pray that they would never again be deceived into thinking the wolf is a dog.

But they're completely different. The wolf destroys. The dog protects.
You have to get close.
Watch what happens. Know the difference. Stop confusing your heart with your spirit.
Feed your spirit.
Listen to your spirit. Follow your spirit. That's where life is. That's where truth is. That's where God is.
Because your life depends on it.
