You've heard it before.
"You only live once."
"This is all you get."
"Make the most of it while you're here."
"Your body is all that matters."
But here's what nobody's telling you: that's a lie. You don't only live once. The real you — your spirit — lives forever. This changes everything.
In the first teaching, we learned that you are three things: spirit, soul, and body. We learned that your body is like ice (temporary), your soul is like water (interactive), and your spirit is like steam (eternal and invisible).
But now we need to go deeper into your spirit. We need to understand what it means that the real you is eternal. Because if you truly believed that your spirit is eternal, it would change how you live today.
Your Spirit Will Never Die
This Is the Most Liberating Truth
Let's start with the most important thing: Your spirit will exist forever. Not your body. Your body will die. Your body will age and weaken and eventually stop functioning. Your body will return to dust. But your spirit? Your spirit will never die.
MATTHEW 10:28
"Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell."
Wait — Jesus talks about soul and body being killed, but He never says the spirit can be killed. Do you know why? Because your spirit is eternal. It cannot be killed. Your spirit existed before your body was born. Your spirit will exist after your body dies. Your spirit is the part of you that will stand before God. Your spirit is the part of you that will experience heaven or hell.
This means right now, at this very moment, the real you — your eternal spirit — is alive. And that real you will be alive forever. You will never cease to exist. The essence of who you are will never be erased from the universe.
Every single thing you're worried about that's based on your body is temporary concern. You're worried about aging? Your body ages. Your spirit doesn't. You're worried about getting sick? Your body gets sick. Your spirit stays perfect. You're worried about dying? Your body dies. Your spirit lives forever.
When you truly believe that your spirit is eternal, you stop living for your temporary body and start living for what lasts.
You Are Made in God's Image
Understanding What That Really Means
GENESIS 1:27
"So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them."
People think this means God looks like us. Like God has a physical body that looks human. But that's not what it means. God doesn't have a body. God is Spirit.
JOHN 4:24
"God is spirit, and his worshippers must worship in the spirit and in truth."
God is spirit. So when the Bible says you're made in God's image, it's not talking about your body. It's talking about your spirit.
Your spirit shares attributes with God Himself:
Infinite
Your spirit reflects infinity — it will exist forever
Creative
You can create, imagine, think up new things
Relational
You can connect with other spirits, with God's Spirit
Has will
You can choose, decide, determine your direction
Conscious
You know yourself, you're aware, you think
Holy
You can pursue righteousness, be set apart for God
Love
You can love, sacrifice, give yourself for others
The God who created the universe, who holds the galaxies together — He put part of His image in you. In your spirit. That's who you are.
Your Spirit Is Connected to God
This Is Where Power Comes From
Here's the most important thing about your spirit: Your spirit can connect to God's Spirit. This is not metaphorical. This is real. When you become a Christian, something actually happens to your spirit. The Holy Spirit of God comes and lives inside your spirit. Your spirit is joined with God's Spirit.
1 CORINTHIANS 6:17
"But whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit."
One with Him in spirit. Not in body. Not in soul. In spirit. Your spirit and God's Spirit become united. They become one.
GALATIANS 2:20
"I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me."
Christ lives in me. How? In my spirit. Your spirit is the place where God lives. Your spirit is the connection point between you and God. Your spirit is what communicates with God's Spirit.
You're not just a random collection of atoms. You're not just an animal with a bigger brain. You are a spirit that can connect to the infinite, eternal God. When you feed your spirit with God's Word, something changes. When you listen to your spirit instead of your body, something shifts. Because your spirit is connected to God's power. And God's power is infinite.
How to Feed Your Spirit
Your Spirit Gets Stronger or Weaker Based on What You Feed It
Just like your body needs food, your spirit needs nourishment. Here's what feeds it:
God's Word
Matthew 4:4 — 'Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'
Bread feeds your body. But the Word of God feeds your spirit. When you read Scripture, meditate on Scripture, speak Scripture — you're strengthening your spirit, making it more alive, more awake, more connected to God.
Prayer
Prayer is how your spirit communicates with God's Spirit.
When you pray, you're nourishing your spirit. You're deepening the connection. You're exercising your spiritual muscles. Every time you pray, your spirit grows stronger.
Worship
Worship turns your focus from the physical world to spiritual reality.
When you worship God — when you sing, celebrate, give Him praise — you're feeding your spirit. You're aligning your spirit with God's Spirit. You're declaring what's true regardless of what you feel.
Time alone with God
The quiet place is where your spirit grows strongest.
When you get quiet, pray, listen, sit in God's presence — that's when your spirit grows strongest. That's when you hear God most clearly. That's when your spirit connects most deeply with God's Spirit.
Here's the problem
Most people feed their body constantly — breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks. They feed their soul constantly — entertainment, social media, conversations, movies. But their spirit? Starving. Is it any wonder people feel empty, anxious, don't know who they are? Their spirit is malnourished. If you want your spirit to be strong, you have to feed it. Make your spirit your priority. Because a strong spirit changes everything.
How to Hear Your Spirit
Learning to Listen to the Real You
Your spirit is always trying to communicate with you. The problem is, your body and your soul are so loud that you can't hear it. Your body is screaming: "I'm hungry! I'm tired! I'm uncomfortable!" Your soul is screaming: "I feel angry! I feel scared! I feel excited!" And underneath all that noise, your spirit is quietly saying something true.
Get quiet.
You cannot hear your spirit in chaos. Turn off your phone. Turn off the TV. Go somewhere peaceful. Sit in silence. In the quiet, your spirit can speak.
Ask your spirit a question.
Don't just sit there. Ask: 'What's true here?' 'What do I need to know?' 'What is God saying to me?' Your spirit is connected to God's Spirit. Your spirit knows the truth.
Wait for the answer.
Your mind wants to rush in with answers. Your emotions want to jump in with feelings. But wait. Be patient. The answer will come. It will be calm. It will be clear. It will be true.
Notice the difference.
Your body says: 'I NEED THIS RIGHT NOW' (urgent, physical, demanding). Your soul says: 'I FEEL THIS WAY' (emotional, intense, changeable). Your spirit says: 'This is true' (calm, steady, certain).
Act on what your spirit tells you.
This is where faith comes in. You have to be willing to act on what your spirit tells you, even if your body is screaming something else, even if your soul is feeling something different. When you do, everything changes.
The Real You Is Showing Up
What Happens When Your Spirit Takes the Lead
When you start feeding your spirit and listening to your spirit and letting your spirit lead, something remarkable happens. The real you starts showing up.
You start making different decisions — the ones your spirit knows are right, not the ones your body wants or your soul feels.
You start having different values — truth, righteousness, love, God become what matter to you.
You start relating to people differently — seeing people as spirits instead of just bodies, loving their real self.
You start experiencing different peace — real peace from being aligned with God, not the false peace of getting what you wanted.
You start knowing who you really are — not defined by job or body or feelings, but by your eternal spirit made in God's image.
You start living like you believe you're eternal — because if your spirit exists forever, what matters today is strengthening it.
JOHN 10:10
"I have come that they may have life, and to the full."
Full life. Abundant life. The life where your spirit leads, your soul follows, and your body obeys. That's the life you're meant to live.
Your Eternal Spirit and God's Eternal Spirit
A Connection That Never Ends
Your spirit's connection to God's Spirit never ends. You won't go to heaven and suddenly lose your spirit. Your spirit will live forever. And for all of eternity, your spirit will be connected to God's Spirit.
For all of eternity, you will exist. For all of eternity, you will know God. For all of eternity, you will experience God's presence, God's love, God's glory.
Even when your body is in the ground, your spirit is with God. Even when your soul has moved on, your spirit is experiencing God. And one day, when Jesus comes back, He's going to raise your body — a glorified, eternal body to house your eternal spirit. Then for all of eternity, you will exist in fullness: spirit, soul, and body, all together, all eternal, all in God's presence.
This is the hope of Christianity. That's worth everything.
A Prayer for You
Father, I'm praying for everyone reading this who hasn't yet grasped that they're eternal.
I pray that You would open their eyes to the truth that the real them — their spirit — will never die. I pray that they would stop living like their body is all they have and start living like they have eternity.
I pray that they would understand that they're made in Your image. That they would see their spirit as the precious, eternal gift that it is.
I pray that they would feed their spirit with Your Word. I pray that they would listen to their spirit. I pray that they would let their spirit lead.
And I pray that they would live today with the confidence of someone who knows they're going to exist forever. Because that changes everything.
In Jesus's name, I'm asking. Amen.
The Real You Is Forever
You are eternal.
Not your body. Not your temporary emotions. You — your real self, your spirit — are eternal.
You are made in God's image.
Your spirit shares attributes with God. Your spirit can connect to God. Your spirit can grow and strengthen.
Your spirit is the real you.
All the things you think define you — appearance, job, feelings, abilities — are temporary. Your spirit is the real you.
Your spirit needs to be fed.
Feed it with God's Word, prayer, worship, time alone with God.
Your spirit can be heard.
Get quiet and listen. Your spirit knows the truth and will guide you if you let it.
You are going to exist forever.
One day your body will die. But you will not. If you've accepted Jesus, your spirit will spend eternity with God.
Live like you believe it. Because the real you never dies.
