Your mind is like a dashboard, a recipe, sheet music, and an ingredients list.
In every moment, your mind is showing you information. Telling you what's real. Giving you data to work with.
But here's the problem: your mind is broken.
Not crazy. Not sick. But broken. Damaged. Filled with lies.
And you're making decisions based on a broken dashboard. You're following a recipe that's wrong. You're playing sheet music with bad notes. You're reading an ingredients list that's incorrect.
And your entire life is being shaped by false information.
This is why Paul says you need to be transformed by the renewal of your mind. Because your mind needs to be fixed. Your information center needs to be corrected.
What Your Mind Actually Is
Understanding the Information Center
Your mind is the thinking part of your soul.
It's not your spirit. Your spirit is eternal. Your spirit is made in God's image. Your spirit knows God.
Your mind is different. Your mind processes information. Your mind thinks. Your mind reasons. Your mind analyzes.
Your mind is your information center.
It's like a computer. It takes input and processes it. You see something — your mind processes it. You hear something — your mind processes it. You experience something — your mind processes it. You remember something — your mind accesses it.
Your mind is constantly working. Constantly processing. Constantly giving you information about your world.
And your mind thinks it knows the truth.
But it doesn't. Not always.
Your Mind Is Broken
Why Your Dashboard Is Giving You False Readings
Here's the problem: your mind is damaged.
THE DASHBOARD IS BROKEN:
A broken dashboard doesn't show you the real speed. It doesn't show you the real fuel level. It doesn't show you the real engine temperature.
You look at it and think you have information. But the information is false. Your mind is like that.
THE RECIPE IS WRONG:
A wrong recipe doesn't make good food. It makes a disaster.
You follow it perfectly. But because the recipe is wrong, the result is wrong. Your mind is full of wrong instructions about how life works.
THE SHEET MUSIC HAS BAD NOTES:
Bad sheet music creates bad music. Even if the musician plays it perfectly, it sounds terrible.
Your mind is full of bad notes. False information masquerading as truth.
THE INGREDIENTS LIST IS INCOMPLETE:
An incomplete ingredients list doesn't tell you what's really in the food. You might miss crucial information.
Your mind is missing information. It has gaps. It has incomplete pictures.
YOUR MIND IS BROKEN. And you've been trusting it to show you the truth.
How Your Mind Got Broken
Understanding the Damage
Your mind didn't start broken. You were born with a functioning mind. But over time, it got damaged. It got filled with lies. It got programmed with false information.
From your family:
Your parents had broken minds. They passed their broken thinking to you. "You're not good enough." "Money is hard to get." "Love is conditional." "People can't be trusted." Their lie. Now your lie. Their belief. Now your belief. Their wound. Now your wound.
From your culture:
Your culture has broken thinking. And it's messaging at you constantly. "You need to look a certain way to be worthy." "You need to have certain things to be successful." "You need to achieve certain things to matter." "You need to be like everyone else to belong."
From your trauma:
When something bad happened to you, your mind made conclusions. "I'm not safe." (One bad experience. Now your operating system.) "People hurt you." (One person. Now your assumption about everyone.) "I can't trust my judgment." (One mistake. Now your belief about yourself.)
From your past failures:
Every time you failed, your mind recorded it. "I'm a failure." (One failure. Now your identity.) "I can't do this." (One 'no.' Now your permanent belief.) "I don't deserve success." (One loss. Now your core belief.)
From the enemy:
Demonic lies plant themselves in your mind and feel like truth. "You're worthless." "God doesn't love you." "You'll never change." "You're too broken." And you believe them. Because they feel true. Because they're repeated often enough.
YOUR MIND GOT BROKEN. And now it's running your life with false information.
The Consequences of a Broken Mind
How False Information Creates False Life
When your mind is full of lies, your entire life is shaped by those lies.
Broken Dashboard
Mind says: "You're running out of fuel."
Reality: You have plenty of fuel.
You panic. You pull over. You waste time and energy.
Broken Recipe
Mind says: "Pursue this relationship. This person is good for you."
Reality: This person is toxic.
You follow your mind's recipe. And you get hurt.
Broken Sheet Music
Mind says: "You're not smart."
Reality: You're intelligent.
You play from broken sheet music. And you underperform.
Broken Ingredients
Mind says: "Love means staying even when you're hurt."
Reality: Love means protecting yourself.
You follow false ingredients. And you stay in harm's way.
YOUR BROKEN MIND IS CREATING YOUR BROKEN LIFE.
The Proof: Proverbs 23:7
Your Thoughts Actually Become Your Reality
There's a verse that explains everything:
"As a man thinks in his heart, so is he." — Proverbs 23:7
What you think. What you believe. What your mind tells you is true. That's what you become.
You think you're a failure?
You become a failure.
Not because you are one. But because you think you are. So you act like one. So you create failure.
You think you're unlovable?
You become unlovable.
Not because you actually are. But because you think you are. So you push people away. So you sabotage relationships.
You think you're stupid?
You become stupid.
Not because you actually are. But because you think you are. So you don't try. So you underperform.
Your thoughts don't just affect your mood. Your thoughts create your reality.
This is why transforming your mind is so crucial. Your mind isn't just a nice-to-have. Your mind is THE BLUEPRINT. What your mind believes, your life becomes.
How to Feed Your Mind Truth
Reprogramming the Broken Dashboard
So how do you fix your mind? How do you reprogram the broken dashboard? You feed it truth.
FEED YOUR MIND SCRIPTURE
God's Word is truth. When you read Scripture, you're feeding your mind real information. Not opinions. Not feelings. Truth.
"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." — Psalm 119:105
Scripture is light. When you read it, your mind gets illuminated. It sees truth.
FEED YOUR MIND GOD'S PERSPECTIVE
Start asking yourself: What does God say about this?
God says: "I've never left you or forsaken you. I'm working everything for your good."
God says: "I love you with an everlasting love. You're my beloved child."
God says: "You can do all things through Christ who strengthens you."
Replace what your mind says with what God says.
FEED YOUR MIND TRUTH ABOUT YOURSELF
Your mind has a narrative about who you are. And most of it is false. Change the narrative.
FEED YOUR MIND POSITIVE REALITY
Notice what's actually true. What's actually happening. Not the catastrophe your mind is imagining, but what's real.
Train your mind to see what's actually true. Not what you're afraid of. But what's real.
FEED YOUR MIND HEALTHY CONTENT
What goes in comes out. If you're feeding your mind garbage, your mind produces garbage.
Stop watching fear-based news all day. Stop reading depressing social media. Stop consuming content that reinforces lies about you. Start consuming Scripture. Start consuming truth. Start consuming what builds you up.
The Four Metaphors Show You How
Your Mind as Dashboard, Recipe, Sheet Music, and Ingredients List
THE DASHBOARD NEEDS NEW READINGS
A broken dashboard needs to be repaired or replaced. Your mind needs to be reprogrammed with truth. Every time your mind tells you something, ask: "Is that true? Or is that a lie I learned?" And replace the false reading with the true reading.
Mind: You're going to fail. (False reading)
Truth: God is with you. You can do this. (True reading)
THE RECIPE NEEDS TO BE CORRECTED
A wrong recipe needs to be replaced with a right recipe. Your mind needs to be updated with God's instructions. The recipe your family gave you might be wrong. The recipe your culture gave you might be wrong. The recipe your trauma gave you might be wrong. Get a new recipe. God's recipe. Instructions that actually work.
THE SHEET MUSIC NEEDS GOOD NOTES
Bad sheet music needs to be replaced with good sheet music. Your mind needs to be filled with good information. True information. God's information. Stop playing the bad notes you were given. Start learning the good notes. The truth. God's truth.
THE INGREDIENTS LIST NEEDS TO BE COMPLETE
An incomplete ingredients list needs all the ingredients. Your mind needs the full picture. The complete truth. You might have partial information that feels like truth. But it's incomplete. Get the full truth. The complete picture. What God says about you, about life, about everything.
Renewing Your Mind
What Paul Actually Means
"Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is — his good, pleasing and perfect will." — Romans 12:2
Transformed by the renewing of your mind. That means: Update your operating system.
Your mind is the operating system of your life. If your operating system is running on broken code, your life glitches. But if you renew your mind — if you reprogram it with truth — then your life transforms.
How do you renew your mind?
This is not a one-time thing. This is an ongoing practice.
Your mind will want to go back to the old lies. Old thinking patterns are comfortable. But keep feeding it truth. Keep replacing lies. Keep renewing.
What Changes When Your Mind Is Renewed
The Power of a Truth-Filled Mind
When you start feeding your mind truth, things shift.
You make better decisions.
With a broken dashboard, you make bad decisions. With a true dashboard, you make good decisions.
You see opportunities instead of obstacles.
A broken mind sees failure in everything. A renewed mind sees possibility.
You feel better about yourself.
A broken mind tells you you're worthless. A renewed mind tells you you're worthy.
You experience less anxiety.
A broken mind imagines catastrophe. A renewed mind sees God's protection.
Your relationships improve.
A broken mind assumes people will hurt you. A renewed mind sees people's good intentions.
Your entire life transforms.
Because your mind is the information center. When it's filled with truth, everything else follows.
Practical Steps to Renew Your Mind Today
What to Actually Do
Identify a lie your mind believes.
What does your mind tell you that you know isn't true? "I'm not good enough." "I'm going to fail." "Nobody loves me." "I can't change." Name it.
Find the Scripture that contradicts it.
What does God say about this? If your mind says "I'm not good enough," God says "You are chosen, holy, and dearly loved." If your mind says "I'm going to fail," God says "I will never leave you or forsake you."
Write it down.
Don't just think it. Write it. Make it concrete. "My mind says: _________". "God says: _________"
Read it daily.
Feed your mind the truth. Multiple times a day if necessary. Every time the lie tries to come back, remind it: "No. Here's what's true."
Believe it.
At first you'll be faking it. Your mind will resist. But keep saying it. Keep reading it. Keep believing it. Eventually, the new truth will become your new normal.
Your dashboard will show new readings.
Your recipe will produce new results. Your sheet music will play good notes. Your ingredients list will be accurate.
A Prayer for You
Nicole's Prayer Over Your Mind
Father, I'm praying for everyone reading this whose mind is broken.
I pray that you would help them see the lies they've been believing. Help them recognize false information running their life.
I pray that you would fill their mind with your truth. With your Word. With your perspective.
I pray that they would be transformed by the renewing of their mind. That their old thinking would die and new thinking would emerge.
I pray that as their mind is renewed, their entire life transforms. That they would make better decisions. That they would see themselves as you see them. That they would live the abundant life you promised.
In Jesus's name, I'm asking. Amen.
