Your mind knows the truth.

Your dashboard shows the right reading. Your recipe has the right ingredients. Your sheet music has good notes. Your ingredients list is accurate.

But you choose wrong anyway.

You know the person is bad for you, but you pursue them. You know the decision is unwise, but you make it. You know the habit is destroying you, but you keep doing it.

Because your will is not your mind.

Your mind can know. But your will can choose something completely different. And that's the most powerful and most dangerous thing about you.

You have the power to choose. And that power can destroy you or save you.

What Your Will Actually Is

The Steering Wheel in Your Hands

Your will is your power to choose. It's the ability to decide. To determine. To select one path or another.

Your will is yours. Nobody else controls it. God doesn't force it. Demons can't override it.

Your will belongs to you.

And that's incredible and terrifying.

THE CAR'S STEERING WHEEL:

The steering wheel is in your hands. You control where the car goes. The dashboard tells you there's a cliff ahead. But your hands grip the steering wheel. And you decide: Am I going to turn? Or keep going straight? That choice is yours.

THE COOK:

The recipe says "add salt." But the cook decides: "I'm going to add sugar instead." The recipe is just a guide. The cook has the power to follow it or change it. That power is the cook's.

THE MUSICIAN:

The sheet music says "play softly." But the musician decides: "I'm going to play loudly instead." The sheet music is just instructions. The musician has the power to interpret and execute.

THE CHOICE TO TASTE:

You look at the ingredients list. It says "Contains allergen." You have the power to choose: Am I going to taste this? Or not? That choice is yours.

YOUR WILL IS YOUR POWER TO CHOOSE. And you exercise it constantly.

The Problem: Knowing and Doing Are Different

Your Mind vs. Your Will

Here's the frustrating truth: You can know something is right and choose something else. You can know something is wrong and choose it anyway.

"I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do — this I keep on doing." — Romans 7:19

Paul KNOWS what's right. But Paul CHOOSES wrong. This is SO RELATABLE because this is your life too.

You know you should leave that toxic relationship.

But you choose to stay.

You know you should stop the addiction.

But you choose to continue.

You know you should speak up.

But you choose to stay silent.

You know you should forgive.

But you choose to hold a grudge.

Knowing and doing are not the same thing. Your mind is one thing. Your will is another. And your will is extremely powerful.

Your Will Is Powerful

Understanding What You're Actually Capable of

Your will can override everything.

Your will can override your mind.

Your mind says: "This is stupid." Your will says: "I'm doing it anyway." And you do it.

Your will can override your emotions.

Your emotions say: "I'm terrified." Your will says: "I'm doing this anyway." And you face your fear.

Your will can override circumstances.

Everything says: "This is impossible." Your will says: "I'm going to try anyway." And sometimes, you succeed.

Your will is the most powerful force in your life.

Because your will determines your choices. And your choices determine your life. You're not a victim of your circumstances. You're not enslaved to your emotions. You're not controlled by your mind. You have a will. And your will is powerful.

Why You Choose Wrong

Understanding the Steering Wheel Problem

So if your will is so powerful, why do you choose wrong? Why do you steer toward the cliff when you can see it coming?

1

Your Will Has Been Trained Wrong

Your will is like a muscle. It gets trained by repetition. Every time you choose something, you strengthen the pathway for that choice. If you repeatedly choose to stay in toxic relationships, your will gets trained for toxic relationships. Your will becomes GOOD at what you repeatedly choose.

2

Your Will Follows What You Love

Your will moves toward what your heart desires. If your heart desires pleasure, your will pursues pleasure. If your heart desires approval, your will seeks approval. Your will is loyal to what you treasure.

"Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." — Matthew 6:21

And where your heart is, your will follows.

3

Your Will Gets Tired

Choosing right is harder than choosing wrong. Right choices often require sacrifice. They require delayed gratification. They require effort. Wrong choices often feel easier in the moment. So your will, when tired, chooses the easier path.

4

Your Will Gets Confused

Your mind says one thing. Your emotions scream another. And your will doesn't know which to follow. So your will defaults to whatever is loudest or most familiar.

5

Your Will Doesn't Believe There's a Better Option

Your will is trying to steer the car. But if it doesn't believe there's a path that leads somewhere good, it steers toward what's familiar. Even if familiar is destructive.

The Four Metaphors Show You the Problem

And the Solution

THE STEERING WHEEL

Dashboard shows "Cliff ahead" / Mind knows "Don't go that way"

But your will turns the steering wheel anyway.

Why?

  • You're used to cliffs (trained wrong)
  • You're seeking the thrill (heart desires it)
  • You're tired of being careful (will is exhausted)
  • You don't believe there's a better path

The solution: Train your will to steer right.

THE COOK

Recipe says "Add salt" / Mind knows "Salt is right"

But the cook adds sugar anyway.

Why?

  • The cook is used to sugar (trained wrong)
  • The cook loves sugar (heart desires it)
  • The cook is tired of following recipes
  • The cook doesn't believe salt will work

The solution: Train your cook to follow the right recipe.

THE MUSICIAN

Sheet music says "Play softly" / Mind knows "Soft is right"

But the musician plays loudly anyway.

Why?

  • The musician is used to playing loud (trained wrong)
  • The musician loves the intensity (heart desires it)
  • The musician is tired of restraint
  • The musician doesn't believe soft will work

The solution: Train your musician to follow the right sheet music.

THE CHOICE TO TASTE

Ingredients list says "Contains poison" / Mind knows "Poison will kill you"

But you taste it anyway.

Why?

  • You're used to danger (trained wrong)
  • You're craving it (heart desires it)
  • You're tired of being careful
  • You don't believe the warning

The solution: Train your will to reject poison.

Training Your Will

How to Make Right Choices

Your will is not fixed. Your will can be trained. In fact, your will IS trained. The question is: trained toward what?

1

Decide What You Want Your Will to Move Toward

Not what your emotions want. Not what your culture says. What you ACTUALLY want. Do you want a healthy relationship? Or a toxic one? Do you want integrity? Or shortcuts? Do you want freedom? Or addiction? Get clear on what you're training your will toward.

2

Make That Your New Default

Start making small choices in that direction. Want a healthy relationship? Make a small choice in that direction. Want integrity? Make a small choice in that direction. Every small choice strengthens the pathway.

3

Repeat It Until It Becomes Automatic

Your will gets trained by repetition. After 10 healthy choices, healthy feels more normal. After 50, healthy feels natural. After 100, unhealthy feels foreign. Your will learns.

4

Celebrate the Wins

When your will chooses right, acknowledge it. "I steered away from the cliff. Good will." "I followed the recipe. Good cook." Celebrate so your will knows that's the direction to go.

Aligning Your Will With God's Will

The Ultimate Training

Here's the most important part: Your will is powerful. But your will can be wrong. That's why you need to align your will with God's will.

God's will is not about controlling you. God's will is about protecting you.

God's will is the steering wheel pointing AWAY from the cliff.

God's will is the recipe that actually works.

God's will is the sheet music that creates beauty.

God's will is the ingredients that nourish instead of poison.

"Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve." — Joshua 24:15

Choose. That's your power. That's your will. But choose wisely. Choose God's way.

"Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of righteousness." — Romans 6:13

Offer your will to God. Let your will serve righteousness instead of sin.

1

Know God's will.

Read Scripture. Understand God's character. Learn God's values. What does God say about relationships? About integrity? About freedom? About how to live?

2

Choose to align with it.

Even when it's hard. Even when you don't feel like it. Your feelings will lie. Your circumstances might be tough. But God's will is always true. Choose it.

3

Keep choosing it.

Train your will toward God's will through repeated choices. The more you choose God's way, the more natural it becomes.

When Your Will Is Aligned With God's Will:

• Your steering wheel points away from cliffs.

• Your cook follows the recipe that creates life.

• Your musician plays the music that creates beauty.

• Your choices lead you toward nourishment instead of poison.

The Power of Choice

You're More Powerful Than You Think

Here's what most people don't understand: You have more power than you realize.

You're not a victim of your circumstances. You're not enslaved to your emotions. You're not controlled by your mind.

You're the one steering the car.

Not your circumstances. Not your emotions. Not your past. You.

The steering wheel is in your hands.

Every day, you make hundreds of choices.

Each choice trains your will.

Each choice shapes your life.

Each choice moves you toward your future or away from it.

What Changes When Your Will Aligns With God

The Transformation That Happens

You stop sabotaging yourself.

You stop steering toward the cliff. You stop adding poison to the recipe. You stop playing bad notes. You stop choosing destruction.

You make decisions that actually work.

The cook follows the recipe and food turns out good. The musician plays the right notes and music sounds beautiful. The driver steers away from danger and arrives safely.

Your life becomes coherent.

Your mind knows something. Your will chooses it. Your emotions experience the good results. Everything aligns.

You experience freedom.

Not freedom to do whatever you want. Freedom from the chains of wrong choices. Freedom from the steering wheel pointing toward cliffs. Real freedom. True freedom.

Practical Steps to Strengthen Your Will Today

What to Actually Do

1

Identify where your will is weak.

Where are you making wrong choices repeatedly? In relationships? In finances? In habits? In decisions? Name it.

2

Identify God's will for that area.

What does God say about relationships? About money? About habits? About decisions? Find Scripture that addresses it.

3

Make ONE small choice in that direction.

Not a big dramatic change. One small choice. One conversation. One decision. One action.

4

Repeat it tomorrow.

And the next day. And the next day. Build the muscle through repetition.

5

Notice how your will strengthens.

After 10 right choices, it gets easier. After 50, it feels more natural. After 100, the old way feels foreign. Your will is trainable. Your will responds to repetition.

A Prayer for You

Nicole's Prayer Over Your Will

Father, I'm praying for everyone reading this whose will has been trained wrong.

I pray that you would help them understand that they have power. That they're not victims. That their will can be retrained.

I pray that they would align their will with your will. That they would make choices that lead toward life, not death.

I pray that they would feel their will strengthen as they make right choices. That it would become easier. That the old way would become foreign.

I pray that they would experience the freedom that comes from having their will aligned with yours.

In Jesus's name, I'm asking. Amen.

Your Will: The Steering Wheel

What I Want You to Leave Knowing

Your will is powerful. Your will is yours. Your will is the steering wheel.

You can steer toward the cliff or away from it. That choice is yours.

Your mind can know something but your will can choose something else.

Knowing and doing are different. Your will is what determines what you actually do.

Your will is trained by repetition.

Every choice you make trains your will to make that choice again.

Your will can choose wrong even when your mind knows better.

That's why you need to: Understand what your will loves. Train your will toward what's right. Align your will with God's will. Make small choices that strengthen right choosing.

The four metaphors show the solution:

• The steering wheel steers away from cliffs

• The cook follows the recipe that works

• The musician plays good notes

• You choose nourishment instead of poison

Your will is powerful. Your will can be trained. Your will can change.

Your will is the steering wheel. You're the one driving. Steer toward life.

The power is in your hands.
